Tilting at Windmills

May 5-27, 2018
Opening May 5th 5-7PM

Jed Williams Gallery
615 Bainbridge St,
Philadelphia, PA 19147

Culling ideas from sources including medieval manuscripts, the mannerist paintings of El Greco, and Miguel de Cervantes “Don Quixote”, Rodriguez juxtaposes the deluded hero seeking adventure and waging war with imaginary enemies against contemporary issues and the nature of reality.

The sources are there but also serve as the launching point for the act of painting- hidalgos, windmills and giants become rich impastoed surfaces teaming with texture and gesture, embracing multiple intersecting perspectives and meanings. From the small collages and paintings on paper to the large canvases in the show - each work is a microcosm of the colliding inner and outer worlds of the modern human experience.
